Quarter horse with external abscess, fever, and cough

Test Results 2

Appropriate testing is done, and results are shown:
  • Thoracic ultrasound did not reveal pleural effusion, and no mass lesions were noted. An irregular pleural surface and slight ventral lung consolidation were noted.

  • Cytology of fluid from the transtracheal wash showed septic, suppurative inflammation (neutrophils that often contained intracellular rod-shaped bacteria). Rods stain gram positive, which is consistent with C pseudotuberculosis.

  • Culture and sensitivity testing: Growth of C pseudotuberculosis was obtained and showed susceptibility to a wide range of antibiotics.
